Cookie policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026.

Cookies are small pieces of information stored by your browser. WikiAnimals uses Google Analytics to understand how the website is used and Google AdSense to show advertising. These Google services set cookies for visitors; WordPress sets essential cookies only for administrators.

Analytics and advertising cookies are used only with your consent, where the law requires it. Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for this consent through Google’s consent message, where they can accept or refuse. You can change your choice at any time from the privacy settings link shown by that message, or by clearing the website’s cookies in your browser.

Analytics cookies

Google Analytics sets the _ga and _ga_* cookies to tell visits and sessions apart. They last up to two years in your browser; the visit data linked to them is kept in Google Analytics for 2 months. Google Analytics records information such as the pages you view, how long you stay, your device, browser and approximate location; WikiAnimals sees only summary reports.

Advertising cookies

Google AdSense and its advertising partners may use cookies such as __gads, __gpi and IDE to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad and measure results. Where allowed, Google may use your visits to WikiAnimals and other websites to choose ads that match your interests. You can turn personalised ads on or off in Google’s My Ad Center.

Essential cookies

  • Login cookies: WordPress cookies such as wordpress_logged_in_* and wordpress_sec_* identify an authenticated session.
  • Administration preferences: WordPress may use wp-settings-* cookies to remember settings for authorised editors.
  • Cookie support: the login screen may use wordpress_test_cookie to check whether the browser accepts cookies.

Cookies expire according to their session or login settings. You can also remove them through your browser.

Other services

Social icons open external websites when selected. Playing an embedded video connects to its provider, which may use its own cookies or storage.

Your browser controls

You can view, remove or block cookies in your browser’s privacy settings. The animal profiles remain fully readable with analytics and advertising cookies blocked. To stop Google Analytics on every website, you can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

For more information about who runs the website, how long information is kept and your rights, see the privacy policy. How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services explains how Google processes this information. Technical background on WordPress login cookies is available in the WordPress documentation.
