Romanian dog breeds

Romania has four shepherd breeds, all bred to guard flocks in the mountains: the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog, Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog, Bucovina Shepherd Dog and Romanian Raven Shepherd Dog.

How the breeds were chosen

The list includes dog breeds with Romania as their country of origin. The Carpathian, the Mioritic and the Bucovina Shepherd Dog are fully recognised by the FCI. The Raven Shepherd Dog was recognised by the Romanian Cynological Association in 2008 and provisionally by the FCI in 2024. The Romanian hunting breed, the Transylvanian Hound, is recognised by the FCI with Hungary as its country of origin.
