Shelled animals

Some animals have a shell, bony armour or another hard outer covering that helps protect them. These coverings have different structures and evolutionary origins.

Which animals have shells or armour?

Examples include turtles, armadillos, crabs, crayfish, lobsters, snails and sea urchins. A turtle’s shell is made of bone, while a crab’s hard covering is an exoskeleton.
