Longhaired cat breeds

Longhaired and semi-longhaired cats have a thick coat, often with a ruff around the neck and “breeches” on the hind legs. The list includes the Persian, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Siberian, Norwegian Forest Cat and Birman, among others.

How the breeds were chosen

We included breeds whose standard requires a long or semi-long coat. Breeds that come in both coat lengths (such as the American Curl, LaPerm, Selkirk Rex or Kurilian Bobtail) are not on the list. A long coat needs regular brushing; the Persian and the Himalayan need it every day.
