Red and reddish animals

Red pandas, red foxes, orangutans and red squirrels can have reddish coats. Some ladybirds have a red upper body, often marked with black spots. Shades range from orange-red to reddish brown.

Examples of red and reddish animals

  • Red panda: much of the coat is reddish, with dark areas and a paler face.
  • Red fox: the familiar form has reddish or orange fur, but much darker colour forms also occur.
  • Orangutan: long reddish hair contrasts with grey skin.
  • Red squirrel: Sciurus vulgaris can have reddish fur or darker shades. Not every squirrel is red.
  • Red ladybirds: the seven-spot ladybird is one example. Other species and forms may be yellow, orange or black.

Why do shades vary?

Genetics, age and seasonal coat changes can influence appearance, depending on the species. A dark-coated red fox does not become a different species.

What can the colour do?

A red panda’s coat can help it blend into elements of its forest habitat. Many ladybirds have contrasting warning colours. A similar colour can serve different roles in different animals.
