Types of tigers

Tigers belong to the species Panthera tigris. Populations differ in size, appearance and habitat, ranging from tropical forests to temperate woodland with cold winters.

Tiger populations and traditional subspecies

Traditional names include Bengal, Siberian or Amur, Sumatran, Indochinese, Malayan and South China tigers. These names describe populations or traditional subspecies, rather than six separate species. Specialist classification is under review, and some treatments group them into mainland and Sunda subspecies.
