Japanese dog breeds

Japan has several old spitz-type breeds, used for hunting in the mountains, as well as companion dogs, such as the Akita, Shiba Inu, Shikoku, Kai Ken, Japanese Spitz and Japanese Chin.

How the breeds were chosen

The list includes breeds that the FCI records with Japan as their country of origin. The American Akita appears here because the FCI also records Japan as its country of origin.
