Birds of Romania

Romania has resident birds, migratory birds and species present only during particular seasons. Some live near houses; others depend on forests, grasslands, lakes or reedbeds. Wild birds use different habitats across Romania.

Where can you observe these birds?

  • Towns and gardens: sparrows, blackbirds and various crows.
  • Forests and orchards: woodpeckers, owls and other birds that use trees.
  • Open country: larks, quails and pheasants.
  • Near water: pelicans, cormorants, herons and ducks.

A bird’s presence depends on the region and season. Some species only pass through during migration, and some leave before winter.

Different species, different ranges

Owls and woodpeckers include many species worldwide, but only some occur naturally in Romania. Their ranges and seasonal movements differ.
