Largest dog breeds

The tallest breeds on WikiAnimals are the Great Dane (80–90 cm at the withers in males) and the Irish Wolfhound (at least 79 cm), and the heaviest is the English Mastiff (73–104 kg in males, according to the AKC). The list also includes the Saint Bernard, Leonberger and Boerboel, among others.

How the breeds were chosen

We chose the breeds with the greatest height at the withers or weight in the breed standard (FCI or, where noted, AKC), as shown in the physical table on each breed’s page. The values are for males; females are usually smaller. Large dogs usually live less long than small ones and need space and food to match.
