Green animals

Green iguanas, green anacondas and quetzals have noticeable green colouring. Green also occurs in many parrots, some chameleons and certain aphids. It can cover only part of the body.

Examples of green animals

  • Green iguanas: females and young animals may be bright green; males can develop orange shades.
  • Green anacondas: often olive or greyish green with dark spots; other anacondas differ.
  • Quetzals: green iridescent feathers occur alongside other colours, with differences between sexes and species.
  • Parrots: many species have extensive green plumage, but others are grey, blue or red.
  • Chameleons: some species and individuals are green, rather than every chameleon being permanently green.
  • Aphids: some of these sap-feeding insects are green; others are black, yellow or pink.

How can green colouring help?

Green can provide camouflage among plants. For example, thick-billed parrots blend into pine needles. A colour’s role depends on the animal and its surroundings.

Why does appearance vary?

Age, sex and species can affect colour. Iridescent feathers, including those of quetzals, change appearance with lighting and viewing angle. Green may occur alongside spots, stripes and other colours.
