Animals of the Danube Delta

The Danube Delta supports waterbirds, semi-aquatic mammals and animals using forests, sandy ridges and land beside the water. Pelicans, cormorants, grey herons, otters and European mink use suitable habitats in the delta.

Animals use different habitats

  • Lakes and channels: feeding places for pelicans, cormorants and other birds.
  • Banks and dense vegetation: shelter and travel routes for otters and European mink.
  • Forests and sandy ridges: habitats used by wild boar, roe deer and other mammals.
  • Dry land and water margins: areas where jackals and foxes may occur.

Some birds nest here, while others winter or pass through during migration. Some animals are present only in certain seasons. Season and location matter.

Seasonal and regional differences

Cormorants and geese include many species with different ranges. The species found in the Danube Delta depend on habitat, season and migration routes.

The delta’s fauna includes wetland animals and birds of Romania.
