Dog breeds for first-time owners

For a first dog, it helps to choose a breed that learns easily, adapts well and asks for moderate physical effort. This list includes the Golden Retriever, Havanese, Shih Tzu, Pug, English Cocker Spaniel and Bolognese, among others.

How the breeds were chosen

We combined several American Kennel Club (AKC) breed ratings: at least 4 out of 5 for trainability, adaptability and affection with the family, at least 3 out of 5 for getting on with young children, and at most 3 out of 5 for energy and protective instinct. Giant breeds are not included. Breeds without an AKC profile are not included. The rating describes the breed in general. Every dog has its own character, and training and socialisation matter just as much.
