Threatened animals

Some animal populations are declining as habitats shrink, food becomes scarcer or hunting, pollution and climate change affect survival. Animals facing conservation pressures include species assessed as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Which animals face extinction risks?

Examples include tigers, some rhinoceroses, gorillas, orangutans, blue whales, axolotls and giant pandas. Each species, and sometimes each population, has its own risk category.

Forest loss, poaching, polluted water and environmental change can threaten wildlife.
