High-energy dog breeds

If you run, hike or cycle, an energetic dog can keep you company. This list has breeds with a great deal of energy, such as the Border Collie, Siberian Husky, Australian Shepherd, Vizsla, Weimaraner and Dobermann.

How the breeds were chosen

The list includes breeds with the top score (5 out of 5) for “Energy Level” in the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed ratings. Breeds without an AKC profile are not included. These dogs need plenty of physical and mental exercise every day; without it they can become destructive. Puppies should not be overexerted until they are fully grown.
