Dog breeds for apartments

Some dogs settle into apartment life more easily than others. This list has small and medium breeds that adapt well and need a moderate amount of exercise, such as the French Bulldog, Pug, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Maltese and Lhasa Apso.

How the breeds were chosen

We included breeds that score at least 4 out of 5 for “Adaptability” and at most 3 out of 5 for “Energy Level” in the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed ratings, leaving out large and giant breeds. Breeds without an AKC profile are not included. These dogs still need a walk every day. The rating describes the breed in general. Every dog has its own character, and training and socialisation matter just as much.
