Quiet dog breeds

For your neighbours and for peace at home, it matters how often a dog barks. This list has breeds known for being quiet, from the Basenji, Golden Retriever, French Bulldog, Akita, Saint Bernard and Whippet.

How the breeds were chosen

We included breeds with a score of 1 or 2 out of 5 for “Barking Level” in the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed ratings. Breeds without an AKC profile are not included. A bored dog, or one left alone for long periods, can bark a lot whatever its breed. The rating describes the breed in general. Every dog has its own character, and training and socialisation matter just as much.
