Hunting dog breeds

Hunting dogs were bred to track, point or retrieve game. This list has hounds, pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniels, such as the Beagle, Transylvanian Hound, Vizsla, German Shorthaired Pointer, Irish Setter and Labrador Retriever.

How the breeds were chosen

The list includes breeds from FCI Groups 6 (scent hounds and related breeds), 7 (pointing dogs: pointers and setters) and 8 (retrievers, flushing dogs and water dogs). We also added a few American hounds not recognised by the FCI (coonhounds), which sources describe as hunting dogs. Sighthounds (FCI Group 10), which hunted by sight, have their own list. The Dalmatian is in Group 6 but is not a hunting dog, so it is left out.
